Japan Foundation’s “Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis” Exhibition unveiled at PNCA in Islamabad

In a bid to offer a glimpse into the rich tapestry of traditional Japanese culture, the Japan Foundation’s renowned pottery exhibition “Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis” kicked off at the National Art Gallery of the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) in Islamabad.

Running until February 29, the exhibition, a collaborative effort between the Japan Foundation, the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad, and PNCA, aims to acquaint visitors with Japan’s unique and centuries-old ceramic heritage.

Exhibit features 80 exquisite artifacts

Featuring over 80 exquisite pieces ranging from ancient examples to modern interpretations, the exhibition showcases yakishime wares, tea vessels, food containers, and more, highlighting their integral role in Japanese daily life. Additionally, the display presents non-utilitarian objects crafted by contemporary ceramic artists, aiming to convey the distinct Japanese sensibility and aesthetic to a global audience.

The event provided attendees with an opportunity to witness the evolution of yakishime, a traditional Japanese ceramics technique characterized by firing unglazed wares at high temperatures, from its ancient origins to contemporary expressions.

The inauguration ceremony, graced by Jamal Shah, the Caretaker Federal Minister for National Heritage & Culture, and Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Wada Mitsuhiro among other distinguished guests, took place on February 15, 2024.

During his address at the inaugural ceremony, Ambassador Wada lauded the time-honored tradition of Japanese ceramic artistry, emphasizing Japan’s knack for blending tradition with innovation. He noted the similarities between yakishime and Pakistan’s Blue Pottery from Multan, citing a shared sense of warmth and simplicity.

Highlighting the longstanding cultural ties between Japan and Pakistan, the Japanese Ambassador expressed optimism about witnessing the evolution of Pakistan’s traditional arts in the future. He commended PNCA for its collaboration in organizing the exhibition, underscoring the importance of cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding and appreciation between nations.
