Women across Pakistan, from civil society to academia, science, media, business, and beyond, exhibit dynamic and resourceful efforts in addressing climate challenges.
Pakistan Gender Climate Award 2024 winners
The winners of the second edition of the Gender Climate Award have been announced in connection with the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024.
The winners of the Pakistan Gender Climate Award 2024 are:
- Qandeel Rehman (Climate Action)
- Umbreen Arif (Green Business)
- Khalida Niaz (Young Climate Journalism).
Each winner will receive PKR 1.2 million to advance their activity and use the funds to deepen the gender climate nexus in their work.
Recognizing that climate change disproportionately affects women and girls, exacerbating existing inequalities, the Pakistan Gender Climate Award 2024 emphasizes the imperative to harness the potential of women in combating climate change. Women’s significant roles in agriculture and natural resource management underscore the necessity of optimizing their engagement in climate action.
Aisha Khan, Executive Director of the Civil Society Coalition for Climate Change (CSCCC), emphasized the pivotal role of women in shaping the future.
“Women are the future changemakers. They adapt, conserve and nurture. Their capacities and key roles have not always been recognized due to social and cultural constraints. It is time now to give visibility to their strengths and use their knowledge and skills to navigate the climate crisis. Investing in women today will brighten all our tomorrows,” Khan said.
The selection process for Pakistan Gender Climate Award 2024 involved a nationwide call for applications across the three categories, with a jury comprising representatives from the Embassy of France, AFD, the EU Delegation, UNDP, and CSCCC screening the submissions.
The award ceremony, slated for May 8, 2024, will honor the remarkable achievements of the winners, further highlighting the importance of women’s leadership in climate action.
