In these catastrophic times of flooding and recovery, Pakistanis could not help but notice the insensitivity of local artists flying to Canada for award shows and called out both celebrities and HUM TV for conducting the event on such a grand scale while the flood victims continue to suffer.
The death toll from devastating floods has crossed the 1,600 mark since June 14.
Celebrities and famous personalities from across the world are visiting the flood-affected areas of Pakistan, to lend a helping hand to the victims, including, Islamic scholar Mufti Ismail Menk, veteran Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and Ertugrul star Celal Al.
While the fans are overjoyed to see international celebrities visiting flood-hit areas, they also felt betrayed by Pakistani celebs sharing pictures of their trip to Toronto for attending the Hum Awards show.
Remarks of key personalities and Netizens
PPP leader, SharmilaFaruqi shared a collage of pictures in a Twitter post, showing Angelina Jolie in Dadu and local actors in Canada, and wrote, “Here is Angelina Jolie visiting our worst flood-affected district Dadu, spreading love & hope, and appealing to the international community to come for our help. In sharp contrast to this, our Pakistani shining stars are all in Toronto for awards, making merry and ready for some scintillating performances.”
Former Pakistani actress, Noor Bukhari also shared similar sentiments on social media.
She said, “Watching Angelina Jolie visit Pakistan is embarrassing when our so-called celebrities, who reach every mall and dance on every street for promotional events of their upcoming projects, are nowhere to be seen. HadiqaKiani and Resham are exceptions.”
One Twitterati said, “We have Angelina Jolie visiting flood-affected areas to raise awareness about the devastation, and then we have our local celebs who have gone to Canada for Hum awards apparently. Priorities. Sigh.”
Another added, “One tweep shared, “Angelina Jolie is in Pakistan on a relief mission for the flood victims. Whilst Pakistani celebrities are in Canada for some award shows. Priorities. Btw, Pakistani celebs who diligently attended Imran Khan jalsas are yet to visit a flood relief camp.”
Jolie calls Pakistani floods a “wake-up call” for the world
Angelina Jolie, who previously visited Pakistan to meet the victims of the deadly 2005 earthquake and devastating 2010 floods, said on Thursday, “I am absolutely with you in pushing the international community to do more… I think this is a real wake-up call to the world about where we are at.
“Climate change is not only real and it’s not only coming, but it’s also very much here,” she stated during a meeting of civil and military officials in the capital Islamabad.
