Qatari Princess Asma Al Thani named as Pakistan’s Ambassador for Mountains Tourism after she scales Nanga Parbat

After braving avalanches, rockfall, and the death zone of Nanga Parbat, Qatari royal and elite mountaineer Sheikha Asma Al Thani has earned more than just a summit. She’s now the official face of Pakistan’s mountains and adventure tourism, appointed as brand ambassador by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif himself.

The Prime Minister made the announcement on the platform X, celebrating her record-setting climb and praising her “inspiring” determination.

“I am pleased to appoint Her Highness Sheikha Asma Al Thani as the Brand Ambassador for Pakistan’s Mountains and Tourism,” wrote PM Sharif. “My heartfelt felicitations to Her Highness on her recent feat of scaling Nanga Parbat. It is truly inspiring!”

He added that her success is a “powerful message of courage and determination” and reflects the “enduring friendship between Pakistan and Qatar.”

Breaking barriers at 8,126 Meters

With this ascent, Sheikha Asma became the first Qatari woman to summit Nanga Parbat, a treacherous 8,126-metre peak in Gilgit-Baltistan known globally as the “Killer Mountain.”

The climb is infamous for its severe weather, technical difficulty, and high fatality rate. This marks her ninth successful 8,000er—bringing her closer to her goal of climbing all fourteen of the world’s tallest mountains.

On Instagram, Sheikha Asma shared a deeply personal account of the ordeal: “My ninth 8000er and one of the toughest climbs I’ve faced. This mountain tested me in ways I didn’t expect, from black ice beneath my feet to rockfall every few seconds. A constant reminder of how fragile life truly is,” she wrote.

“But even in that danger, there was growth… strength I didn’t know I still had… I climb not just to reach summits but to return to what matters.”

High-Altitude Symbol of Friendship

Sheikha Asma’s appointment also reflects growing cultural and diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Qatar, with tourism and sport diplomacy emerging as powerful tools.

By aligning with an Arab woman breaking records on the world’s most dangerous peaks, Pakistan is strategically amplifying its image as a global adventure tourism destination—especially to Gulf and Middle Eastern audiences.

Pakistan’s northern region is home to some of the highest peaks on Earth, including K2, and is increasingly seen as a frontier for eco-tourism, cultural exploration, and high-altitude sports.

Sheikha Asma has already summited Mount Everest, K2, and Makalu, earning global recognition for pushing the boundaries of what Arab women—and women in general—can achieve in the world of high-altitude mountaineering.

Atop Nanga Parbat, she unfurled Qatar’s national flag, a powerful gesture of personal and national pride. “This mountain will stay with me forever,” she wrote.
