DG ISI Lt Gen Faiz briefed Army Chief on ‘internal security
Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited the headquarters of the country’s premier intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), on Monday.
General Bajwa was received by Director General ISI Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid, according to a statement from the military’s media wing ISPR.
The COAS was briefed on “internal security and the ongoing situation in Afghanistan” by DG ISI.
General Bajwa expressed his satisfaction over the preparedness of the organization, the ISPR statement said.
The Army chief’s visit to the ISI headquarters comes amidst a reported standoff between the military and the government over the appointment of the new spy chief.
The army had announced on October 6 that the incumbent ISI chief, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, had been appointed the Peshawar corps commander, while Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum was appointed in his place. But the Prime Minister’s Office did not issue an official notification.
The procedure for appointment of ISI director-general is neither mentioned in the Constitution nor the Army Act hence previous appointments were made as per customs under which the army chief proposes three names to the prime minister who then appoints the DG ISI.
The government officials say that the impasse over the new ISI chief has been almost resolved as the PM Office has received a summary from the defence ministry in this regard.
