Pakistan took a major step forward in wireless connectivity by introducing Wi-Fi 6E, the next generation of Wi-Fi technology, utilizing the 6 Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band.
The advancement made Pakistan the 10th country in the Asia Pacific region to adopt this cutting-edge technology, joining an exclusive group of only 60 countries worldwide that have opened up the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi services.
The Wi-Fi 6E rollout announcement was made at an event titled “Unlocking Pakistan’s Connectivity: Enablement of Next-Gen Wi-Fi in 6GHz Band,” organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman emphasized that this development positions Pakistan as a regional leader in next-generation wireless technology, aligning with a select group of forward-thinking nations in Asia.
Representatives from META, Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA), Jazz, Nayatel, and Huawei discussed the advantages of adopting Wi-Fi 6E in Pakistan at the event.
Wi-Fi 6E promises faster connectivity
Currently, Wi-Fi in Pakistan operates in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, offering bandwidths of 100 MHz and 150 MHz, respectively. These bands are shared with various other applications, such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, and cordless phones, leading to congestion and performance issues.
Wi-Fi 6E promises to alleviate these issues by providing faster speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity. This technology is particularly beneficial for data-intensive applications like online gaming, video streaming, and virtual reality.
PTA representative highlighted that this move would facilitate more reliable and high-speed internet access across the country, ultimately fostering a more inclusive digital economy.
Industry experts at the event pointed out that Wi-Fi 6E would enhance user experience, increase network capacity, and improve overall performance.
Wi-Fi 6E is expected to revolutionize how Pakistanis connect and interact online, paving the way for a more advanced and interconnected digital future.
The introduction of Wi-Fi 6E is a significant part of the government’s “Digital Pakistan” vision, aimed at driving digital innovation, empowering businesses, and bridging the digital divide.
What Is Wi-Fi 6E?
The Wi-Fi 6E standard adds support for the 6GHz spectrum, offering faster wireless speeds and lower latencies. The Wi-Fi 6E standard is designed for high device densities and high-bandwidth applications such as video streaming, videoconferencing, and voice calls. However, you’ll need a new router and Wi-Fi 6E-compatible devices to tap into those new airwaves.
Wi-Fi 7 was officially released by the Wi-Fi Alliance officially in January 2024, and it promises to significantly boost the speed and stability of your wireless connections.
